Hunter from South Carolina, Rachel Johnson, Matilda Newport, Mrs. J. B. Russwurm from Baltimore, MD, and Collinette Teage Ellis from Virginia.
The design of the Liberian flag, first unfurled on August 24, 1847, has remained the same through the decades. It is the same design that whipped in the wind on January 16, 2006 when Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf took the solemn oath of office as the twenty-fourth President of the Republic of Liberia.

First thing I've read about Liberia. It was short, but interesting. Tells the story of Susannah Lewis, the Black Betsy Ross of Liberia who was commissioned to create the new flag of Liberia in 1847. The book introduces you to Susannah, and the six woman she chose to help her design the new flag. Where possible a short history is provided for each woman, telling where she came from in America, and her present history in Liberia.Flash forward four weeks to April 24, 1847, Liberian Flag Day. All of the businesses were closed so everyone could participate in the National ceremonies. Susannah Lewis made a patriotic speech before presenting the new flag to Governor Joseph Jenkins Roberts. A cry rings out from the audience, and the flag is raised to the top of a thirty foot flagpole.
The story of the flag fills the first 53 percent of the book; the last half provides a pattern for anyone ambitious enough to quilt the flag.
